Behind the Build: Designing the M12™ Brushless Rotary Tool Insert

Behind the Build: Designing the M12™ Brushless Rotary Tool Insert

Welcome back to Inside the Lab, where we break down how the team at Code Breaker Labs turns everyday tools into job-ready systems for your Milwaukee PACKOUT™.

This time we’re looking at the M12™ Brushless Rotary Tool Insert — a full kit layout designed for the PACKOUT™ Compact Organiser. Rotary tools are the “do everything” problem-solvers, so the insert had to match that energy: big storage, fast access, and a layout that lets you carry the entire setup in one compact box.

Design Starting Point

Building around the user, not the CAD model

This design started with the user journey. We mapped out how tradies actually use the M12 Rotary Tool: quick touch-ups, on-the-spot grinding, deburring, polishing, and the occasional “save the day” fix. From there, we designed a system around unlocking as much value as possible from the organiser space.

The result is an insert that combines a dedicated tool cradle, a removable accessory tray, and multiple hidden compartments — all inside a single Milwaukee PACKOUT organiser. Nothing rattles, nothing gets buried, and every bit has a home.

Layout & Overall Design

Adaptability for the maker

A full rotary setup in one box — bits, pads, batteries and the tool all laid out logically.

The footprint of the insert is built around adaptability. Rotary tools are used in all kinds of environments: maintenance rooms, site sheds, utes, workshops and even on ladders. So the organiser wasn’t just designed to store the tool — it was designed to work with it.

Key elements of the layout include:

  • An all-in-one holder that carries the tool, batteries and core accessories
  • A removable organiser tray for your most-used bits and heads
  • A dedicated battery section in the bottom left for M12 packs
  • Extra storage hidden underneath the lift-out tool holder

Together, these turn a standard organiser into a purpose-built PACKOUT organiser insert specifically for the rotary tool.

The Removable Accessory Tray

Take just what you need to the work area

Removable tray with sloped pockets that make tiny parts easy to grab.

The tray in the top-left corner was designed to be its own mini organiser. Instead of dragging the whole PACKOUT with you for a small job, you can just grab the tray and walk over to the work area.

Tray handle doubles as a scoop, catching small heads as you pick them up.

The tray features:

  • A built-in handle that doubles as a scoop for small rotary heads
  • Bevelled, sloped pockets so bits roll into your fingers instead of hiding in corners
  • Asymmetric angles so everything stays within your line of sight when the tray is on a bench

For makers, sparkies, fitters and fabricators, this turns the kit into a flexible packout accessories setup: full organiser when you need it, small parts tray when you don’t.

Tool-On Storage

Ready for quick jobs and big sessions

Tool stored with battery and accessory attached for true grab-and-go use.

Rotary tools don’t always get packed away between tasks — sometimes they go back in the organiser with a disc still on, ready for the next cut. So we built the tool cradle to support storage with a battery and accessory still attached.

The removable tool holder gives a snug, positive fit for the tool with:

  • Battery on or off
  • A cutting wheel, grinding stone or sanding drum still in the chuck

Whether you’re doing a quick fixup or a longer shaping session, the insert supports both ways of working.

The Rotary Tool Holder

From PACKOUT box to bench stand

Lift-out holder turns into a portable stand for any workbench or job site.

One of the most important parts of this design is the dedicated rotary tool holder. It’s not just a slot — it’s a removable stand that can live on any workstation.

The holder gives you:

  • Ample clearance around the tool head so you can leave your favourite bit installed
  • An ergonomic grip with our signature Code Breaker tread pattern for extra control
  • A hidden built-in angular handle under the patterned area so you can lift it out easily

Drop the holder on a bench, table, scaff deck or ute tray and the tool has a stable “home base”. Combined with the removable tray, it turns your organiser into a modular workstation.

Battery & Bulk Storage

Six base compartments plus three hidden ones under the cradle keep everything locked in and organised.

Underneath the tray and tool cradle there’s serious storage capacity baked in:

  • Six base compartments for batteries, abrasives and larger accessories
  • Three hidden compartments revealed when you lift the tool holder out
  • Room for both compact and 4.0Ah M12 batteries

It’s all about giving the rotary tool the same treatment as our other Milwaukee packout inserts — everything in its place, no wasted space, and a layout that makes sense when you’re in a rush.

Designed for Real-World Abuse

Job-ready materials and geometry tuned for real site use.

Like the rest of our Milwaukee packout accessories, this insert is printed using our high-strength, high heat-resistant material — built to handle hot utes, rough sheds and daily site work.

Combined with the modular layout, this makes the M12 Rotary Tool Insert a genuine everyday carry for anyone who relies on a rotary tool to solve problems quickly.

Everything has its place — no rattling, no digging, no wasted time.
