Behind the Build: Designing the M12 FUEL Sub-Compact Impact Wrench Insert

Welcome back to Inside the Lab, where we break down how the team at Code Breaker Labs designs purpose-built solutions for Milwaukee PACKOUT™ systems.

This article dives into the design of our M12 FUEL™ ⅜″ Sub-Compact Impact Wrench and Socket Set Insert. Built as an evolution of our previous ⅜″ layouts, this version focuses on tighter tool fitment, improved ergonomics, and increased rigidity — all while keeping the insert practical for daily site use.

Tool Fitment

Dialled in using our latest tool-mapping process

Using our updated tool-mapping process, we were able to achieve a precise snug fit for the impact wrench. The goal wasn’t to clamp the tool in place, but to support it properly — preventing movement while still allowing for smooth removal.

This insert also introduces our foam protection system, which applies gentle, consistent pressure to the tool when the lid is closed. The result is improved protection during transport and reduced wear over time, especially in harsh environments.

More Rigid Design

Strength where it matters most

Because the sub-compact impact has a smaller footprint, we were able to reinforce key areas of the insert — particularly around the socket housing. This increased rigidity helps the insert hold its shape over time, even with repeated use.

The layout has also been optimised to integrate seamlessly with a removable tray system. Beneath the tray is a lower storage compartment designed for the extra bits and accessories you inevitably collect over time.

That lower compartment has been upgraded with filleted edges, making it easier to grab smaller items without fighting sharp corners.

Ergonomic Design

Easy pickup without compromising fit

Tight fitment is only useful if the tool is still easy to remove. To solve this, we designed an ergonomic pickup point on the left-hand side of the tool.

This opening allows you to lift and place the impact wrench smoothly, even when moving quickly or working with gloves. Additional filleting throughout the socket storage zones also makes it easier to retrieve sockets from the bottom.

Belt Loop Compatibility

The M12 FUEL™ ⅜″ sub-compact impact wrench includes a belt loop attachment, and we made sure the insert supports that — regardless of which side you prefer to run it on.

No forced configurations, no compromises. The insert works with your setup, not against it.

Battery-On Storage

Built around real-world preferences

This insert is designed to accommodate the tool:

  • With a High Output battery installed
  • With a 2.0Ah battery installed
  • Or with no battery at all

Whatever your preference, the fitment remains secure and accessible. This flexibility ensures the insert works for the way you actually use your tools on site.

Foam Cushioning

Extra protection where it counts

Each insert includes a durable piece of EVA foam that installs into the lid of your PACKOUT™ Compact Organiser. When the lid is closed, the foam applies light pressure to the tool, keeping everything secured and preventing movement.

This additional layer of protection helps extend the life of your tool — especially when your setup lives in utes, trailers, or site sheds.

Built for Long-Term Use

Like all of our Milwaukee PACKOUT inserts, this design is focused on durability, usability, and efficiency.

It’s not about flashy features — it’s about reducing tool damage, saving time on site, and keeping your setup organised job after job.
