Behind the Build: Designing the M18™ Angle Grinder Insert
Share
Welcome back to Inside the Lab. In this build, we’re breaking down the design process behind our M18™ Angle Grinder Insert — a system built to improve workflow, increase organisation, and most importantly, reinforce safe use on-site.
Like all of our Milwaukee PACKOUT™ accessories, this insert wasn’t designed around theory — it was built from real-world use. Angle grinders are one of the most commonly used tools on-site, but also one of the easiest to misuse or store poorly. This insert solves both.

Guard Protection & Safe Use
One of the biggest design decisions in this insert was centred around safety. Instead of allowing the tool to be stored with the guard attached, we intentionally designed the layout so the guard must be removed and placed on top of the tool.
This forces a simple but critical habit — before using the grinder, you have to reinstall the guard. It’s a small design choice that creates a consistent safety check every time the tool is picked up.
We’ve also embedded a clear visual reminder directly into the insert itself. It’s not there for looks — it’s there because angle grinders can do serious damage when used incorrectly.

Snug Tool Fitment
Using our tool-mapping design process, we created a precise fit for the M18™ angle grinder. The tool rests on key contact points at the head and base, which keeps it secure while opening up space underneath for storage.
This approach does two things — it protects the tool during transport, and it improves accessibility. When you open the case, everything is visible and ready to grab in one motion.
No rattling, no wasted movement — just a clean, repeatable workflow.
Disk Storage That Actually Works
Most setups treat disk storage as an afterthought. We didn’t.
This insert features a two-tier storage system located beneath the tool. The lower section is designed for grinding discs, while the upper section is for cutting discs. Both are positioned centrally to eliminate movement, even when the discs are worn down.
Each slot is spaced to allow easy finger access, so you’re not digging around trying to pull one out. In total, the system holds up to 21 reinforced cutoff wheels while keeping everything organised and visible.

Handle & Flange Storage
The handle and flange system has been designed as its own dedicated zone within the insert. These are the parts you’re constantly swapping out, so they needed to be both secure and easy to grab.
The handle is locked into position using both the base support and lid pressure when closed, while still remaining stable when the case is open. The flange and tool sit in their own defined positions, keeping everything together in one place.
No more loose parts floating around your PACKOUT organiser.

Accessories Compartment
The top-left compartment is designed to handle the extras — specifically your secondary dust cover and any small parts you pick up on the job.
The dust cover is stored with the sharp edges facing up, keeping it secure while also making it easy to remove when needed. Beyond that, the space gives you flexibility to carry whatever else you need without cluttering the main layout.
It’s a small feature, but it adds a lot of usability over time.

Built Around Real Use
This insert wasn’t designed to look good on a shelf — it was built for daily use on-site.
Every detail, from the way the tool sits to how the discs are stored, is focused on making your workflow faster, cleaner, and more reliable. You open the case, everything is where it should be, and you get straight to work.
That’s the standard we hold across all our PACKOUT inserts.
If you’re running an angle grinder regularly, this isn’t just storage — it’s a system that actually works with you.
